The Mindful Making Method
The heart of creativity.
A favourite piece of fabric. The rhythm of your hands. A few quiet moments spent doing something you enjoy.
Making can give us somewhere to settle our attention, follow our curiosity and reconnect with ourselves.
The Mindful Making Method offers five gentle principles to accompany that experience:
Pause. Presence. Purpose. Process. Practice.
Developed through Helen Gleeson’s years of bear making, this approach invites you to enjoy how you create, as well as what you make.
A gentle rhythm for making
You can bring these principles to stitching, gardening, cooking, quilting or another creative practice you enjoy.
They can accompany a few spare minutes or a leisurely afternoon. Begin with whichever feels most helpful today.
Pause · Allow yourself to arrive
Before reaching for your materials, take a moment to notice how you feel.
Make yourself comfortable. Settle your tools within reach. Perhaps take a sip of coffee or open the window.
Let this small pause mark the beginning of time you have chosen for yourself.
Ask yourself: What would help me settle here today?
Presence · Notice this moment
Bring your attention to what is in your hands.
The texture of fabric. The scent of herbs. The colours you are choosing. The movement of a needle through a seam.
When your thoughts wander, gently return to one detail you can see, feel or hear.
Ask yourself: What am I noticing that I might otherwise have missed?
Purpose · Remember why you are here
Your reason for creating can be simple.
Perhaps you want to learn something, make a gift, experiment with an idea or enjoy a little time to yourself.
Allow that reason to guide your choices. It can change from one day to the next.
Ask yourself: What would I like this time to offer me?
Process · Stay curious as you learn
Every project brings decisions, discoveries and adjustments.
A seam may need unpicking. A recipe may need adapting. A colour combination may surprise you.
Give yourself time to look, experiment and learn. Notice the parts you enjoy along the way.
Ask yourself: What is this teaching me?
Practice · Make room to return
Your creative life will change with your circumstances and energy.
Some days you may have time to become absorbed in making. At other times, a few minutes—or a longer pause—will suit you better.
When you return, bring what you have learned with you. There is no need to catch up.
Ask yourself: What would make my next visit feel inviting?
Try a mindful making moment
Before your next creative activity, spend a quiet minute with your materials.
Notice how you are arriving. Choose one detail to give your attention to, then consider what you would enjoy from this time.
Begin with one small action.
As you continue, notice when you want to hurry and whether you could give this part a little more time.
Before putting things away, ask:
What did I enjoy, and what would I like to return to?
You can use just one principle today. Familiarity can grow through experience.
