Connecting with Your Creative Self
Finding your way back to the joy of making.
Perhaps you remember how absorbed you once became in something you loved doing.
Choosing fabrics. Trying a recipe. Writing in a notebook. Spending an afternoon making something simply because it interested you.
Life changes, and those pleasures can become harder to reach. You may miss them without knowing quite what you would like to return to.
Connecting with Your Creative Self is an illustrated Studio Companion by Helen Gleeson, inviting you to explore what feels meaningful, enjoyable and supportive in your creative life today.
Make room to hear yourself
Creativity offers opportunities to notice your own responses.
Which colours do you keep choosing? What feels satisfying beneath your hands? When do you become curious, and when do you feel yourself rushing?
These small observations can help you understand your preferences, recognise your needs and make choices that feel more like you.
You can discover something about yourself while sewing a bear, tending a garden, cooking or arranging familiar objects in your home.
Three ways to reconnect
Notice what draws you in
Pay attention to the things you linger over: a texture, a photograph, a pattern or an idea that keeps returning.
You don’t have to explain your interest or decide what it will become. Give yourself a little time to explore it.
Ask yourself: What have I been drawn to lately?
Choose an intention that supports you
Consider how you would like to spend your creative time.
Perhaps you want to experiment, enjoy something familiar or learn at an unhurried pace. Let your intention reflect the energy and time available to you.
You can adjust it when your circumstances change.
Ask yourself: What would feel worthwhile today, even without a finished project?
Follow a small “what if?”
Try a different colour pairing. Use a familiar ingredient in a new way. Experiment with a scrap of fabric before committing to a whole project.
Small experiments give you room to discover what you enjoy. You can keep the result, change it or simply appreciate what you learned.
Ask yourself: What would I try if I gave myself permission to be curious?
A little room for you
Settle somewhere comfortable with a notebook or a few loose pages.
Think of a time when you enjoyed making something. It might be recent, or a memory from years ago.
Write a few thoughts:
What did I enjoy about that experience?
Which part would I like to welcome into my life now?
Have my interests changed?
What small choice could honour what I enjoy today?
Perhaps you miss the pleasure of choosing colours more than the particular craft. Perhaps you long for quiet concentration, playful experimenting or time spent making alongside someone else.
Let your answers guide one manageable invitation to yourself.
