Teddy — Module Five

An Introduction to Mink • Inserted Muzzle Technique • Guided Face Trimming

Teddy is your soft and spacious introduction to working with mink — a beautiful way to explore this luxurious fur without needing a full mink coat or committing to an entire mink head. In Module Five, you’ll learn how to create a mink muzzle insert while keeping the rest of the bear alpaca, giving you the perfect balance of fluffy cheeks, gentle contrast, and manageable trimming.

This technique cuts down on the amount of mink required, makes the pattern more accessible, and gives you a clear visual guide for shaping and trimming the face. It’s also a wonderful method to use whenever you want to place a different fur around the face — alpaca body with mink cheeks, mohair body with mink muzzle, or any combination your creativity dreams up.

“Creativity thrives in gentleness. Let this be a beginning that feels kind, spacious, and entirely yours.”

What You’ll Learn Inside Module 5

Slow Stitching for a Gentle Beginning

A soft arrival into making — shoulders down, breath steady, hands ready.

“This isn’t about getting it right… it’s about giving yourself space to explore.”

Working With Mink (Beginner‑Friendly)

This module introduces mink in the most accessible way possible: a small inserted muzzle, supported by alpaca everywhere else.

You’ll learn how to:

  • prepare mink pieces safely

  • remove the lining from a mink coat

  • glue muslin backing to stabilise the leather

  • cut mink without losing fur

  • pair mink with alpaca for a seamless transition

This method gives you the confidence to work with mink without overwhelm — just a small, sweet section of the face.

The Inserted Muzzle Technique (Button Method)

You’ll follow a clear, photo‑guided process to:

  • cut six head pieces (alpaca + mink)

  • sew mink muzzle pieces to alpaca head pieces

  • join the gusset

  • position the gusset using the button method

  • sew the head together with clean, even seams

  • untrap fur along all mink/alpaca joins

This creates the familiar three‑piece head structure, but with a beautifully fluffy mink muzzle ready for sculpting.

Guided Face Trimming (Your Mink Practice Project)

This is the heart of Teddy — a safe, structured way to practise trimming mink.

You’ll learn how to:

  • trim the gusset in layers

  • remove guard hairs

  • shape cheeks gradually

  • follow the alpaca boundary as your trimming guide

  • clear fur in front of the eyes

  • trim the septum line

  • shape the V under the mouth

  • refine cheek rounding after stitching the mouth

Because the alpaca sits directly behind the mink, you always know exactly where to stop, making this the perfect project for beginners.

“Use this bear as your guide — the areas you trim here are the same areas you’ll trim on a full mink head.”

Sewing & Construction

Module Five includes full instructions for:

  • sewing the body, arms, legs, ears, and paw pads

  • stuffing with balance and intention

  • jointing with bolts, washers, and nuts

  • eye placement with accents

  • optional clay nose (Module 4)

  • shaping the muzzle before trimming

Final Touches

Finish Teddy with gentle details:

  • soft shading with Copic markers

  • grooming and smoothing

  • needle‑sculpting cheeks

  • accessories that suit his personality

  • a final check for balance and expression

Your bear becomes soft, expressive, and ready to be treasured.
