Alfred — Module Three
Traditional Antique Bear • Stuffing Mastery • Gentle Aging Techniques
There’s something deeply nostalgic about Alfred — a traditional mohair bear with soft worn edges, gentle shading, and the kind of well‑loved charm that makes him feel like he’s been carried through generations. Module Three is your invitation to explore stuffing mastery and antiquing techniques, learning how to create a bear that looks beautifully aged, soulful, and full of story.
This guide teaches you how to choose and use different stuffing types, how to shape and fill your bear with balance and intention, and how to create an antique finish using thinning, shading, coconut fibre, vanilla essence, Parisian Essence, and dry brushing. You’ll also make Alfred’s little pair of shorts — or turn them into overalls — to complete his vintage look.
It’s a module filled with creative play, gentle experimentation, and the joy of making a bear that feels like it has lived a little life.
What You’ll Learn Inside Module 3
Slow Stitching for Stillness
A soft return to presence — letting your hands settle into steady movements and reconnect with the quiet part of you that feels comfort in making.
“This guide is a small sanctuary… peace can be found in tiny, intentional moments.”
Stuffing Options & Techniques
This module introduces you to the heart of bear shaping: stuffing. You’ll explore how each material creates a different feel, weight, and personality.
Majestic Merino Wool Noil
Dense, soft, perfect for miniatures — stays exactly where you place it.
Polyfill
Fluffy, light, ideal for larger bears.
Poly/Wool Blend
The best of both worlds — soft, dense, and beautifully controllable.
Coconut Fibre
Perfect for aged bears; can be teased through footpads for a worn, vintage look.
Shredded Wood
Traditional, slightly lumpy, ideal for creating an old‑world bear head.
You’ll learn how to combine these materials to shape Alfred’s body, limbs, and head with balance and intention.
Sewing & Construction
Step‑by‑step guidance for stitching Alfred’s body, arms, legs, head, ears, and paw pads — including:
sewing darts
shaping the head
attaching the gusset
stuffing with firmness where needed
using slit jointing (from Module 2) for arms and legs
attaching cotter pins and discs
creating a clean, tidy finish
Eyes, Nose & Expression
You’ll continue refining your bear’s expression with:
eye placement and optional white accents
nose stitching or polymer clay nose (Module 4)
gentle shaping around the muzzle
soft grooming for a tidy finish
Antiquing Techniques (The Heart of Alfred)
This is where Alfred comes alive — aged, worn, and full of character.
You’ll learn how to:
thin the fur using haemostats
create natural wear areas (head, arms, feet, ankles)
open a footpad hole to reveal coconut fibre
shade with Copic markers, pencils, and oil paints
mix a nostalgic antiquing wash using Vanilla + Parisian Essence
paint aged sections for depth and warmth
dry brush with Burnt Umber for a timeworn finish
deepen eye shading for soulful expression
“Imagine a small child pulling the bear along the floor — this helps guide realistic balding.”
This module is playful, creative, and wonderfully freeing — a chance to experiment and let your bear tell its own story.
Sewing Alfred’s Shorts (or Overalls)
You’ll finish Alfred with a charming pair of vintage shorts:
cut on the fold
sew the inner legs
fray or hem the edges
add straps and wooden buttons
antique the fabric to match his worn look
These little clothes complete his personality and make him feel truly loved.
